All Nerds Like Star Wars

Posted on June 08, 2005 by Freddie Bepler

Where to start? I am not really sure, I’ve never written in any sort of blog before. I have been interning here since last Wednesday and my various experiences thus far have included: a storytelling and bookmaking field trip where the hero was a superdonkey (with hotdog vision- the power to shoot hot dogs out of your eyes, duh!), tutoring during drop-in, printing out and photocopying materials for upcoming field trips, addressing envelopes, cutting up cardboard boxes for recycling, getting change for the superhero supply store drawers, and buying a can of spam for Sam Potts’s birthday. All in all, I’d say it’s been a week well spent.

Also, the kids here are pretty much adorable. Yesterday I worked with Alex, 6, on his Math and English homework and I was blown away by how smart he is. He only asked me for help once, and it was to spell the word “listening.” After he was done he and Anthony, 8, got into an argument over which one of them was a nerd. The other tutor and myself decided that Anthony was the bigger nerd because he hadn’t finished his homework before Alex, but Anthony chose to point out loudly that nerds wear glasses as a bespectacled Ted walked by. After the kerfuffle settled down we went to the backyard to check out the new deck (which is lovely!) along with the garden that is now sprouting up around it. We peered out at the neighbors’ yards, which include a rather verdant rose garden, trees, grass, and pots of herbs. Afterwards, Alex decided he wanted to make a Star Wars comic book online, and he found a website with templates and pictures to make comic books with, so that all he had to do was write and create the story. Again, I was blown away. I’m not sure if I was even using computers when I was his age, let alone was able to remember things like website addresses. Oh, how times are changing! At least I could relate to him on this: Star Wars is the best!

Besides all of that I am excited for the rest of the summer, all of the workshops we are going to be running sound exciting and I hope that I get to help out with them. At this point(my one week anniversary), while the Bruce Springsteen album of the day winds down in the background, I feel really happy to be working here and like I’ve found a great place to spend the summer.

Oh, and an update: I have just been shown the apology note that Anthony gave to Ted for calling him a nerd.
