Brooklyn Superhero Academy
June 16, 2005
Students from the Superhero Radio workshop met last week for a listening party to celebrate the release of their radio drama, Brooklyn Superhero Academy. Visit the writing gallery to hear this exciting tale!
Next week marks the end of drop-in, which means we're busy getting ready for our end-of-the-year celebration. On Tuesday, we'll have readings, refreshments, and our newest Gigantor Books publication (Lucky visitors may even have a chance to subscribe to Brendan's series of comics and receive a free copy of Issue 2, "Utensil Boy vs. Bucket Head").
Once the school year ends, we'll shift our focus toward summer programs and the upkeep of the writing center, which we hope to revamp with new computers, more children's books, and general spring cleaning. Please take a look at our wish list for more information about the items we need.
Backyard Deck Completed and Already in Use!
June 09, 2005
We are pleased to announce the completion of our backyard deck. Built and engineered by volunteers Sean Fri, Brian Young, Josh Martin, Dan Kleinman, and Sam Potts, the deck has already been used by students and will serve in coming weeks for the Summer Playwrights Program. It has an agreeable disposition and generally exudes an aura of deck-ly splendor. Stay tuned for progress on the garden.
Summer at 826NYC
June 08, 2005
With the end of the school year palpably close, our excitement about this year's summer programs is reaching a fevered pitch. We're thrilled to be offering Story Hour and Story Writing for our elementary school students. Thanks to some of our talented volunteers, our Summer Playwrights now have a brand new deck to stage their original plays on in July. And this week, our fifteen novelists-to-be, who are enrolled in the Young Adult Writers' Colony, will meet at the center for an orientation session.
We have about one month to go before our July 5th reading with David Sedaris, Sarah Vowell, Joyce Carol Oates, Lorrie Moore, Charles Baxter, and Akhil Sharma. The event is scheduled for 8pm at Cooper Union. Tickets are only $20.
Our library of student publications has been growing steadily. For a month now, we've been publishing our drop-in students' stories through our Gigantor Books (check out our writing gallery to see how Superdoo saved his math class and how a strong man saved the Statue of Liberty). We have an amazing collection of workshop publications, too. Interested readers may find Stand Clear of the Closing Doors or The Haunted, Rocking, Basketball, Custard, Spring Type Thing at the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Company.
We've just launched an 826NYC blog, where our volunteers post their take on the goings on at the writing center and superhero supply store.
Finally, keep an eye out for a new book from McSweeney's, set to be released in the fall. Noisy Outlaws... features an introduction by Lemony Snicket and stories by Nick Hornby, Neil Gaiman, Jonathan Safran Foer, and more.
