Augustus Gloop Goes Up the Pipe

November 22, 2006

On Sunday, the writing center was full of students, parents, and volunteers celebrating Children's Book Week with a dramatic reading of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The highlight of this two-hour read-aloud came during Chapter 16, when our brave readers pulled out all stops (and all accents!) and left us on the edge of our seats, eager to find out what's up next for Augustus Gloop.

Luckily - and much thanks to Martha Mihalick, Mary Callahan, Patrick Nolan, and Bill Heinzen - we were able to send each of the students home with a copy of the book and a bar of custom-designed chocolate.

The Awesomest Time

November 20, 2006

Last Wednesday our students were treated to a night of Grandma, a troupe of wonderdogs, and a pair of miniature bicycles at the Big Apple Circus. The evening - declared "the awesomest time in my whole life" by Khaled, age 8 - was one our students will remember for a long, long time.

Enormous thanks to the generous folks at Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal LLP for this evening and for their incredible support of our organization this past year.

New Listening in the Writing Gallery

November 03, 2006

Four new radio pieces are now up on 826NYC On the Air, from our recent workshops "Narrative Fiction for Radio" and "So Much Drama." Listen to stories about creepy gun-loving uncles, bratty little sisters, suspicious olive loaf, and a whole slew of cheating hearts, all written and performed by our students.

Cheese Man Meets Cheese Man

November 01, 2006

Zombies, bats, jailbirds, mimes, and OSX invaded the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Company last night to hand out candy, spook the neighbors, and greet Fifth Avenue's parade of trick-or-treaters. But the biggest surprise of the night came about when one author of "The Stinky Cheese Man" met the author of another "Stinky Cheeseman." While the two swapped compliments and admired one another's hats, we snapped this photo to commemorate the occasion.
