Valentino Achak Deng Speaks at 826NYC
April 17, 2007
Please join us on Sunday, April 22, at 7pm, as Valentino Achak Deng talks at 826NYC about What Is the What, the book based on his life as a child refugee from Sudan and his experience coming to the United States. The event is free and open to all.
About What Is the What, a novel by Dave Eggers:
Separated from his family, Valentino Achak Deng becomes a refugee in war-ravaged southern Sudan. His travels bring him in contact with enemy soldiers, with liberation rebels, with hyenas and lions, with disease and starvation, and with deadly murahaleen (militias on horseback)—the same sort who currently terrorize Darfur. Based closely on actual experiences, What is the What is heartrending and astonishing, filled with adventure, suspense, tragedy and, finally, triumph.
Introducing: The Waffle Maker Machine
April 16, 2007
On Sunday, enthusiastic inventors met to design a series of machines designed to solve the world's problems. The day's creations ranged from the high end Real Life (TM) copy machine (which converts photos of cats, dogs, food, etc. into 3-D objects) to the very affordable Flying Potato (which offers smooth transport to those stuck in traffic and/or bothered by car sickness). The Waffle Maker Machine, pictured here, makes toaster waffles with the mere roll of a quarter. All inventions - including step-by-step instructions - will be featured in 826NYC's Best Inventions of 2007.
