Congratulations, Williamsburgh Tutors!

May 22, 2007

Our Williamsburgh tutors have been offering after-school homework help and writing assistance at our satellite tutoring center since February 2006. Thanks to their hard work, the Brooklyn Public Library has recently granted 826NYC a Volunteer of the Year award!

Rodillo vs. The Super Volcano

May 17, 2007

Last night Colette finished illustrating her pop-up story, "The Eruption of the Super Volcano," in which her rolling robot, Rodillo, saves the world from a super volcano and the master plan of Evil Genius 2 (pictured here). Next week we'll begin assembling the story's pop-ups.

Jealous? Sign up for next week's workshop, . We'll share stories of being grounded and getting caught and create a book of cautionary tales and words of wisdom - so that other kids don't make the same mistakes you did.

BEA Weekend with 826NYC

May 09, 2007

826NYC has TWO major events planned for the weekend of June 1-3, while Book Expo America is happening in New York, and everyone's invited - both young and not-so-young.

The first event, on Friday, June 1st, is THE 15th ANNIVERSARY CONCERT OF THE ROCK BOTTOM REMAINDERS, a band made up of literary celebrities Stephen King, Scott Turow, Dave Barry, Amy Tan, Mitch Albom, Scott Turow, Ridley Pearson, Greg Iles, Matt Groening, James McBride, Roy Blount Jr., Kathi Goldmark, Frank McCourt, and Andy Borowitz, that call themselves "the literary world's answer to the Rolling Stones." This show, called the "Still Younger Than Keith Tour," features the return of Stephen King to the band.

826NYC is lucky enough to be one of three literacy charities that the RBRs are supporting with this event. The concert, which takes place at Webster Hall, also has a VIP reception with the band beforehand. If you'll be in town please consider attending the reception, as the money for those tickets comes directly to the charities. For tickets to both events, please see here: Rock Bottom Remainders.

The second event, on Sunday June 3rd, is TINY SMOOSHY SUNDAY ON FIRE, an afternoon all-ages rock show with Smoosh, The Tiny Masters of Today, and Care Bears on Fire. Never mind that the members of these bands aren't yet in high school, or that they're all technically within the age range to take a songwriting workshop at 826—these bands can play.
