826NYC Welcomes Jacqueline Susann
July 22, 2007
It's here. The millipede has arrived. Jacqueline Susann, as she has affectionately been named, is starring in one of two Summer Filmmakers films, appropriately entitled "The Millipede." In the film, two kids discover a dinosaur egg, then take it back to present-day New York City (via time machine). The supposed dinosaur egg instead hatches a gigantic millipede, which grows to be as long as a subway car and wreaks havoc on the city and its inhabitants.
Jacqueline Susann is taking it all in stride. She is currently resting up before she begins her starring role this Tuesday.
Revenge of REVENGE OF THE BOOK EATERS
July 19, 2007
On August 26th 826NYC and The Bowery Presents will present REVENGE OF THE BOOK EATERS, a one-night-only event that brings together some of our most celebrated comedians, writers, and indie-rock songwriters for a rare evening of intimate performances, including FEIST, A.C. NEWMAN (of The New Pornographers), JIM JAMES (of My Morning Jacket), GRIZZLY BEAR, SARAH VOWELL (best-selling author and This American Life contributor), and DEMETRI MARTIN (Daily Show regular, comedy superstar). The night promises once and for all to try to settle the debate: words or music—which is better?
This event, which is named after a story by an 826NYC student, is a follow-up to last year's much-heralded event and six-city tour by the same name—a unique and awe-inspiring synthesis of the literary, comedy, and music communities in support of 826NYC's similarly innovative programming for kids.
826NYC Green Again...
July 17, 2007
826NYC not so eagerly awaits the arrival of a 14-inch millipede that will slither along the huge and gaping cave that has taken over almost half of the writing center. A time machine stands in the middle of the cave, waiting for the next curious soul. Have we stepped into an Alternate Universe? No, it's just our Summer Filmmakers.
That's right: The green screen is back, and more impressive than ever. Twelve students are hard at work writing, starring in, and producing their own films. The scripts are great, and the kids are awesome, but at the end of the summer, the millipede will have to go!
826NYC On the Air!
July 05, 2007
826NYC is on the air again! In June, we collaborated with volunteers from the Writers Guild of America, East and eleven students from the August Aichhorn Center to write and record an original radio drama. The drama, "NYPD Shampoo: Haircuts and Handcuffs," ties together four intriguing stories of murder, mistaken identity, and hair salons. Be sure to check out our broadcast, which will be aired on WNYE (91.5FM) from 6:30-7:00 p.m. on the following dates:
- Wednesday, July 18
- Monday, July 23
- Thursday, July 26
