We offer free evening and weekend workshops designed to foster creativity, strengthen writing skills, and provide students with a forum for executing projects they might not otherwise have the support to undertake. Workshops range from the playful to the practical, and all are taught by volunteer writers, artists, educators, and publishing professionals.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to increased demand, enrollment for workshops are now determined by lottery. Once you have signed up for a workshop, please look for an email from workshops@826nyc.org, verifying that we have received your request. If you have not heard from us after 48 hours, feel free to call.
Our workshops are limited enrollment and often generate wait lists. With this in mind, please only sign up if you can make every session of a workshop. Thank you!

Sundays are fun days at 826NYC. Join us for weekend workshops, each unique, where you'll use your creativity, your problem-solving skills, your ability to whistle or pick things up with your toes. Radio Drama Rama
3 Wednesday sessions: June 28, July 5, 12 (2006)
3-5pm
826NYC
For ages 9-11
Imagine a time before television, when families huddled around the radio every week for the latest installment of their favorite serial dramas. What were they thinking? Why didn't they just wait a couple decades for TV? In this workshop we'll find out, as we write scenes, gather sounds, and produce an original radio play that will capture the imagination in a way no other medium can.
To Think That It Happened
4 Wednesday sessions: June 28, July 5, 12, 19 (2006)
6:30-8pm
Taught by Erika Mayo
For ages 11-14
We know what you're thinking: "There's no such thing as Truth Serum." But seriously, we can actually see what you're thinking. Like former CIA agents, it's our duty to find the little lies in your truths and the little truths in your lies. The only way to get away with some of the stories you've been telling is to write them down (we can't read your mind if we can't see you). Come see if you can write one truth and one lie that are so good we won't be able to tell which is which.
This workshop will conclude with a formal reading of our stories, to which guardians and friends are invited. Students need only bring their wackiest truthful tales.
Ghosts, Smelly Socks, and Other Terrifying Things
3 Wednesday sessions: June 7, 14, 21 (2006)
6-8pm
Taught by Lindsey Moore
Ages 10-12
We know that you like to scare your friends and your little brother with ghost stories - now you can create your own tale of goblins, witches, or whatever it is that keeps you awake at night. We'll learn how to use suspense, character, and descriptive detail to transcribe truly terrifying tales, and the end result will be a collection of the scariest stories ever imagined.
Students need bring only their spooky imaginations. At the end of the workshop each student will receive a bound book with everyone’s stories in it.
Future-Writing
2 Tuesday sessions: June 6, 13
6-8pm
826NYC
For ages 9-11
Are you up for an afternoon of reading...THE FUTURE? If you think you may have an uncanny knack for prediction, it's time to put your powers to the test! In this workshop we will develop our own methods for reading the future. By studying the forecasting techniques of other scientists, philosophers, or psychics, we will create our own version of what lays ahead. Try being an expert analyzer of chewing gum, a crush detector, or make up your own method! You have just as much knowledge of the future as anyone else - put your gut feelings to paper and see if you're right.
Superstar: Songs in the Key of You
5 Sunday sessions: May 28, June 4, 11, 18, 25
12-2pm
Taught by Chris Deaner and Paul Ahern
Limited to 8 students, ages 6-8
Forget idols and INXS. You can be your own superstar. "How can I be a superstar?" you ask. Clearly, you must (super)star in your own video, featuring your own group, and your own music. In five short sessions, we'll write an original song, then direct and star in an original music video.
