This elimination Scrabble tournament will take place on Saturday, March 6, starting at 12:00PM, at 826NYC (372 5th Avenue, between 5th and 6th Street).
THE MORE MONEY YOU RAISE, THE MORE YOU CAN CHEAT! HERE'S HOW IT WORKS:
- SIGN UP in teams of two
- In the days leading up to the tournament, raise money for your team
- On game day, use the funds you've raised to order from a menu of cheats:
- Trade Out a Letter ($25): You may replace any letter on your rack with a new, random letter from the bag.
- The Wheel of Fortune ($50): Purchase a vowel. Any vowel you like.
- Flip a Letter, Instant Blank ($100): Any letter on your rack may be turned into a blank tile by flipping it upside-down.
- Add 10 ($150): When playing a word, you may choose one letter in that word and add 10 to its stated point value.
- Add Q, X, or Z to Any Word ($200): Add a high-scoring Q, X, or Z to any word, anywhere.
- Passport: Play a Word in Any Language ($250): You may not consult a foreign dictionary to find the word, and this word is subject to normal challenge rules if the other team does not believe it is an actual word.
- Consult the Dictionary ($300): One player may consult the dictionary before playing a word. Time spent looking in the dictionary counts against your two-minute turn limit.
- Consult the Scrabble World List ($400): One player may consult the Scrabble word list before playing a word. Time spent looking in the word list counts against your two-minute turn limit.
- Reject a Word ($250): Don't like the word your opponents just put on the board? The player that played the word must take his word off the board, put the used tiles back in the bag, and redraw the same number of tiles just discarded. Play then passes to the next player.
- Invent a Word ($500): The ultimate cheat! For $500, put whatever letters you like together on the game board and, so long as you can pronounce and define it, collect whatever points your one-of-a-kind word gives you.
Do you think our reigning champions, The Fighting Caziques, got to hang on to that glorious trophy for two years because they're such good Scrabble players? Heck no! They raised some big big bucks. (They're actually pretty good at Scrabble, too, but they did use lots and lots of cheats to win.)
Better yet, every penny you raise is a tax-deductible donation to 826NYC that allows us to continue our work helping students across New York City finish all their homework, write their first books, and become all-around more confident writers.
